This local Landcare group previously worked on a site covering 500m of creek frontage along Mullet Creek in Dapto NSW on the southern side of Darkes Rd. The creek was extremely degraded from bank erosion and many weed species were choking sections of the creek. Removal of large woody weeds such as coral tree and willow as well as privet has taken place, and a few remnant rainforest species have been salvaged along the creek line. Plantings in four stages have taken place, involving the planting of 580 long stem Casuarinas and around 2000 mixed rainforest species. The plants are doing really well!
Dapto Community Farm was successful in securing $10 000 with Wollongong City Council Enviro Fund for the removal of large woody weed species, which was matched by Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority. $4 000 was also donated to the project to fund the purchase of plants from Sydney Water, and Landcare Illawarra provided $10 000 for the management of the project and to fund the purchase of plants and materials required.
The group has now moved their efforts, along with their community farm, across the road to the northern side of Darkes Rd. Here, a small group of volunteers has created a network of shared garden beds, a pizza oven and carry out regular restoration work along Mukket Creek. More volunteers are always needed to assist in the revegetation and maintenance of the site on a regular basis, or to help out with the gardening.
