Dapto Community Farm
Site Description
This newly formed Landcare group work on a site covering 500m of creek frontage along Mullet Creek. The creek is extremely degraded from bank erosion and many weed species are choking sections of the creek. Removal of large woody weeds such as coral tree and willow as well as privet has taken place, and a few remnant rainforest species have been salvaged along the creek line. Plantings in four stages are currently taking place. 400 long stem Casuarinas and 50 mixed rainforest species have been planted with a further 180 long stems to go in and a further mixture of 4000 species are to be planted in the near future.
Dapto Community Farm has been successful in securing $10 000 with Wollongong City Council Enviro Fund for the removal of large woody weed species, which was matched by Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority. $4 000 has been donated to the project to fund the purchase of plants from Sydney Water, and Landcare Illawarra has provided $10 000 for the management of the project and to fund the purchase of plants and materials required. More volunteers are needed to assist in the revegetation and maintenance of the site on a regular basis.
